Lagrangian Measurements of Orbital Velocities in the Surf Zone

چکیده
Eulerian and Lagrangian measurements of orbital velocities in waves approaching a beach are analyzed with the goal understanding relative influence wave-by-wave variations mean-water level, wave height incipient breaking on mass transport properties surf zone. It is shown quantitatively that elevated local level correlates positively increased at free surface. ADV fluid column suggest depth-integrated also only weakly linked to wave-breaking events.

Extreme water velocities: Topographical amplification of wave-induced flow in the surf zone of rocky shores
Water velocities as high as 25 m s21 have been recorded in the surf zone of wave-swept rocky shores—velocities more than twice the phase speed of the breaking waves with which they are associated. How can water travel twice as fast as the waveform that initially induces its velocity? We explore the possibility that the interaction of a wave with the local topography of the shore can greatly amp...
متن کاملMicrowave radar cross sections and Doppler velocities measured in the surf zone
[1] The relationship between microwave imaging radar measurements of fluid velocities in the surf zone and shoaling, breaking, and broken waves is studied with field observations. Normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and Doppler velocity are estimated from microwave measurements at near-grazing angles, and in situ fluid velocities are measured with acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs). Joint h...
متن کاملScaling surf zone turbulence
[1] Turbulence in the surf zone, the shallow region adjacent to the shoreline, has a key role in beach erosion, fertilization, dispersal, and larval settlement of marine invertebrates, and microbial contamination dilution in beach waters. Breakingwave generated (the dominant source) surf zone turbulence is understood poorly. A new surf zone turbulent dissipation rate scaling is derived, that co...
متن کاملOn the Velocities of Lagrangian Minimizers
We consider minimizers for the natural time-dependent Lagrangian system in R with Lagrangian L(x, v, t) = |v|/β − U(x, t), where β > 1. For minimizers on a time interval of length T with one endpoint fixed, we prove that the absolute values of velocities are bounded by K log T , provided that the potential U(x, t) and its gradient are uniformly bounded. We also show that the above estimate is a...
